| Our next stop after Petoskey was two nights on Mackinac Island. Mackinac Island is near the straits of Mackinac (pronounced Mack-in-naw), where Lake Michigan meets Lake Huron, and which seperates the upper and lower penisulas of Michigan. Mackinac Island is a popular tourist spot. No automobiles are allowed on the island, you have to get around by bicycle or by horse and buggy. | ||||
This is Michigan State Highway 185, the main highway on Mackinac Island. As you can see, the traffic on this highway consists exclusively of bicycles. That's my mom in front and my dad wearing the t-shirt with the highway sign. |
![]() This is a picture of the Mackinac bridge, taken from a restaurant in Fort Michilimackinac. This bridge connects the upper and lower penniunsulas of Michigan. It is one of the longest single span suspension bridges in the world- over 5 miles long. |
